Autumn Planting Guide

Summer has come to an end so it’s time to start preparing our veggie patches for the colder months ahead, so I thought I would start things off with an Autumn planting guide. Most of this advice is suitable for people living in a temperate or cool climate which includes most of Victoria, the eastern coast of NSW as far inland as Canberra, the coastline around SA and southern WA, all of Tasmania and a tiny part of southern QLD.

Autumn Planting Guide

So, what can we get planting in Autumn?

Herbs

Full Sun

  • Oregano
  • Thyme

Part-Shade

  • Chives
  • Parsley (or full sun)
  • Rosemary (or full sun)
  • Coriander

Vegetables

Full Sun

  • Beetroot
  • Broccoli
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Cauliflower
  • Garlic
  • Kale
  • Lettuce
  • Mustard Greens
  • Pak Choy (and other Asian greens)
  • Parsnip
  • Radish
  • Rocket
  • Silverbeet
  • Spinach
  • Turnips

Part-Shade

  • Leek
  • Onion
  • Shallots

Lots of Autumn plants work well for companion planting, and here’s some combinations you should consider:

  • Beetroot with broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce, onion, silverbeet or radish
  • Carrots with lettuce, leek, onion or radish
  • Broccoli with beetroot or lettuce

Looks like beetroot is a very social little vegetable and gets on well with almost anything!

It’s time for me to really get stuck into overhauling my little balcony garden and I think I’m going to start with lots of leafy greens, herbs and maybe even some broccoli! There’s lots of delicious Autumn and Winter crops ahead, that’s for sure!

And there we have it, my Autumn planting guide! What will you be growing this autumn?

Thank you for this. I’ve been trying to decide what to pop in the patch for winter. Spinach and silver beet are always winners in this home x
