How To: Jar of Dates

Crafty posts aren’t exactly common around these parts, but I thought I’d share a little something I made for B in case you were looking for a simple, homemade and thoughtful gift for Valentines Day, or any other occasion! I actually made this as part of B’s Christmas present!

B and I love getting out and about and visiting new places, eating new things and making the most of all Melbourne has to offer but we are generally very useless at making decisions about what we want to do and can waste time trawling websites for ideas and inspiration. In order to try and help avoid that this year I decided as part of B’s Christmas present I would make us a ‘Jar of Dates’ after seeing them pop up on pinterest time and time again.

They couldn’t be simpler to make either! All you need is a pile of wooden sticks (I used wide ones so I could write on them more easily) and a jar! Lots of versions I saw painted the sticks different colours to correspond with the price bracket of the activity, but I kept all of ours low to moderately priced as if we’re going to do something more pricey like a weekend away or night in a hotel then that’s something we’d generally decide upon together. I just used different coloured pens for fun!

I tried to come up with a mix of daytime and evening date activities, as well as some that we can do at home and some that require heading out on the town. I also made some of them more specific than others as simply putting ‘go out for dinner’ wasn’t going to help with our indecisiveness! I won’t share everything I included in the jar as B does read here on occasion and he hasn’t seen them all yet, but here’s a taste of the kind of things I included:

  • Dessert-only date
  • Picnic lunch
  • Board games & pizza
  • Visit a museum
  • Progressive dinner (entree, main & dessert at different restaurants)
  • See a live band
  • Cheese & port night
  • Trip to a country market
  • Cocktail night at home
  • Visit a gallery
  • Movie marathon & popcorn

Unsurprisingly lots of them are food related, but that’s pretty par for the course for us! It was then as simple as popping them all in a jar, attaching a label and tying a ribbon on!

I had a lot of fun making it, B found it a really thoughtful present and now we have a lot of the decisions made for us for our date days this year – perfect! You can’t beat homemade gifts!

Are you good at making decisions about what to do or where to eat, or useless like us?! What activities would you include in your Jar of Dates?
