Ideas for Screen Free Evening Activities

I’m not always the best sleeper, so I have been trying to have more screen free evening time. I always ensure the last hour or so before I go to bed is screen free, but screen free evenings are even better again. I thought I would share some of my favourite activities, and I’d love to hear your ideas as well!

This is an obvious one, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good screen free activity! Reading is something I am doing a lot more of at the moment, and I had forgotten how much I loved it. Your local library is your friend to keep you in physical books without breaking the bank (or filling your house!), and joining a book club is a great way to keep you committed if need be. I’ve been mixing up the types of books I have been reading, and I’m always open to suggestions if you’ve read something excellent lately!

Listen to something

The best part about this screen free activity is that you can do it in combination with almost all of my other suggestions! Pop on some music, a podcast or even an audiobook and leave the tv off and your computer closed. It can be as relaxing, entertaining or informative as you want it to be, depending on the type of day you have had! If you set yourself up with a playlist of music or podcasts you won’t need to pick up your phone either, which is equally important.

Exercise

If you’re after a more active evening then exercise is of course an excellent option. It doesn’t just have to be heading to the gym either – join a team sport or take a class if you want something that keeps you accountable. Before you join make sure that your physiotherapy sessions booked available via Philip Naiman Physiotherapy. If you’re like me and you prefer morning therapy sessions, then you can use your evenings to do simple stretches at home. This is extra important if you spend most of your day at a desk – anything to help release the tension.

Do a puzzle

I went through a bit of a puzzle period last year and I seriously loved it. It’s such a good screen free evening activity as it requires your attention but is also pretty calming as well. I love popping on some music or a podcast and spending a few hours before bed working on a puzzle. I’ve now re-done all the puzzles my folks still had from when I was a kid, so I think it’s time I picked up some new ones to try. Seriously, if you haven’t revisited puzzles since you were a kid I highly recommend you do!

Craft

Another excellent screen free evening activity is to try your hands at some kind of craft activity. This could be anything like knitting, crotchet, drawing, sewing, woodwork – really, whatever takes your fancy. Take a class, try an online tutorial or dust off an old skill. I used to love cross stitch as a kid, so I’m thinking it might be time I gave that another try!

Pamper yourself

Your evenings don’t always need to be productive, so why not take the time out to pamper yourself. This could mean taking a bath, doing a face mask, giving yourself a manicure – whatever pampering means to you. Light some candles, leave the tv off, put your phone away and have a nice, relaxing evening. Combine it with a delicious tea and you’ll be ready for an excellent night sleep!

Catch up with a friend

One of my favourite evening activities is to catch up with a friend. This could be for dinner, for a walk, see a show or even on the phone – you name it. Not only is an excellent way to stay screen free, it’s also an excellent way to ensure you stay social during the week. I always try and ensure my work-week includes some fund evening activities with friends to ensure I’m not just being social, but to also provide some variety to my evenings. Win-win!

Bake

If you are looking for a nice at home activity then some evening baking might be for you! I usually save my baking for the weekend, but I know my colleagues always enjoy it if I decide to do some mid-week baking instead. It’s a productive and delicious way to have a screen free evening – what more could you want!

Doing a crossword puzzle (or any other kind of logic puzzle) is a good way to exercise your mind. I tend to do the crossword in the paper at lunchtime now as it’s a great mental break from work but I also love doing some crossword or other word puzzles in the evening. I love doing the puzzles in Audrey Daybook as a way to relax and use my mind a little bit.

I find it hard to exercise in the morning before work so I think doing it in the evening might work better for me. Are there any specific light workout tips that you can recommend?
