Lockdown Eating: Smith and Daughters

It’s time for the very last (I hope!) instalment of my Lockdown Eating series! I’m finishing it off with the banquet from Smith and Daughters, which was unsurprisingly packed with vegan goodness. Another banquet that requires a little bit of cooking, but nothing fancy or time consuming and then dinner is served!

The Smith and Daughters banquet was $125 and was designed to serve two, but it’s safe to say I got more than two meals out of it. As the items needed a little heating it was easy to just keep them refrigerated until I was ready to eat each item which I definitely appreciated. So, onto the banquet!

First up was the Focaccia with cherry tomatoes, olives and rosemary. It was doughy, spongey and basically all the things you want from a focaccia!

The next dish, the cacio e pepe braised chickpeas and spring greens, is an early frontrunner for my favourite dish of the bunch. It was packed with flavour, creamy but not heavy, and the chickpeas still had a lot of texture to them. A winning side dish!

Next up was this mutton & heirloom carrot ragu which was rich and hearty with big chunks of carrot throughout. This went particularly well with the focaccia to help mop up the sauce, which was a little on the salty side but still very delicious. In fact, I may have served some of the leftovers on toast for lunch which was a delightful option!

Another of the main dishes were these beef and fennel meatballs. I was a little worried this might be a bit rich for me but I was pleasantly surprised! These meatballs were really delicious – they held their shape well, the sauce was packed with flavour and I really enjoyed the texture too. Another favourite dish!

Every good banquet needs a salad and this was no exception! The Smith and Daughters caesar salad is a classic for a reason, and it was just as delicious at home. The sauce is creamy, the pickles are tart, the veggies are crisp – what more could you want! Plus, look at all that vegan parmesan sprinkled on top!

Now it’s time for the pasta dish – trippa alla romana with fresh casarecce pasta to be precise. This was probably my least favourite of the banquet (although it was still tasty!) because the texture of the faux-tripe was a bit much for me. The flavours were really delicious though, and the fresh pasta was unsurprisingly excellent as well.

Last up on the savoury side was the chicken piccata. I’m not sure I did the best job at plating this one up, but that didn’t impact on the flavour! The ‘chicken’ was really tasty, but it was the sauce that was the real star. Zesty, salty and tart – it was such a delicious sauce and made for an excellent, surprisingly light, dish.

Last but definitely not least was the dessert! It’s hard to go past a tiramisu and Smith and Daughters sure knows how to do it well! It was creamy, packed with coffee flavour and was the perfect way to end the banquet!

While I’m certainly glad I can go back to supporting my favourite restaurants by visiting them in person, these banquets certainly helped get me through all these months in lockdown. This Smith and Daughters one was no exception!

Which dish from the Smith and Daughters banquet are you most keen to try?
