London Exploring: Food Markets

London does food markets incredibly well and I made it my mission to visit as many of them as possible over the few days I was there recently, and boy was I not disappointed! Fresh produce, delicious snacks, handmade goodies and pretty much anything else edible (or drinkable!) you could imagine. Here’s a little about the three food markets I visited!

Borough Market

The Borough Market is London’s oldest food market, and by old they really mean it – a market has existed on the site for over 1000 years which is absolutely mind blowing. It is a wholesale market providing fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products to many London restaurants (and anyone else!), but it also has a wide range of stalls selling snacks and meals, baked goods, handmade chutneys, sweets and pretty much everything else food and drink related.

I visited on a Friday lunchtime which is a busy, but not overwhelming time (the weekends can be crazy!) and spent ages wandering around exploring all the stalls. I snacked on an incredibly delicious but oh-so-cheesy sandwich and picked up some chutney and fudge to take back to the friends I was staying with. If it hadn’t been right at the start of my trip I may well have filled my suitcase with all kinds of goodies!

Broadway Market

The next stop on my food market adventures was Broadway Market in Hackney, which operates on a closed road each Saturday, and has done since the 1890s. Not only are there an excellent collection of stalls located down the street and in the nearby schoolyard but all the local shops open out into the street providing even more great shops and eating opportunities. There are also some non-food related stalls such as handmade clothes and accessories but it’s predominantly fresh produce and street food, which I took excellent advantage of! The haloumi burger I got for lunch was messy but oh-so-tasty!

Maltby Street Market

The final stop on my food market tour was the Maltby Street Market, a small market compared to the other two, but an absolute gem nonetheless. Held each weekend in a little street not far from the Borough Markets, Maltby is predominantly a street food market with all kinds of amazing sweet and savoury stalls, plus thankfully lots of places to sit and enjoy the food. There are also a number of craft beer, local gin and wine stalls too making it an excellent spot to park yourself on a Saturday afternoon. I made the most of the fact there was a gourmet vegetarian sausage on offer, then shared some deliciously tiny waffles with my friends, all rounded off with a gingery-gin concoction. Amazing!

The thing i miss most about London are the food markets! I also used to get an amazing salad from a market in leather lane. It wasn’t strictly a food market but it was a fabulous break from the playground and staffroom at the school I taught in.

I love a good food market – they are definitely a growing thing here now in Australia. But these ones in London look fabulous

They’re definitely starting to grow here but London has them down to a fine art!

I wish we had food markets like this where I live in the US. This sounds like a wonderful way to spend the day! 🙂
