November Balcony Garden Update

It’s been a little while since I have shared a balcony garden update with you lovely folk, so I’m here today to rectify that! Spring and summer are my favourite time to grow things, so I’ve been happily spending lots of time out on my balcony in recent weeks. Here’s what is growing on my balcony right now, I’d love to hear what you’ve got planted too!

I’ve still got a few flowers growing in my freestanding garden, they provided me with gorgeous colour over the winter months so I will let them stay until they run their course before I replace them with some coriander or maybe even a dwarf eggplant if I can find one! I’ve never grown eggplant before, so if you have any tips for me then please do leave them in the comments!

I’ve got lots of happy herbs growing at the moment, including rosemary, chives, mint, perennial basil and now sweet basil too. Herbs are by far my favourite thing to grow as not only am I able to have a great selection in my little balcony garden but they provide me with so much flavour for my food. Pesto has been in high rotation around these parts lately as well!November Balcony Garden | I Spy Plum Pie

I’m attempting to grow full sized capsicum for the first time this year too, I’ve had success with mini-capsicum and chillis in the past (and I still have one very happy chilli plant) so I’m hoping it will flow on to the capsicums too! So far there is one teeny tiny capsicum on the plant, as well as number of flowers so I’m keeping my fingers crossed! Can you spot the little capsicum in the photo?!

Last year I had great success with a cherry tomato plant and only limited success with growing roma tomatoes, so I have decided to mix things up a bit this year. I have planted another cherry tomato in the same spot as last year, so I’m hoping it has the same amount of success! It already has a couple forming so I’m very excited for them to ripen – it’s hard to beat freshly picked tomatoes!

The second tomato plant I am growing this year is called ‘Tiny Tim’ and it grows in more of a bush like shape to just 40cm tall, which sounds pretty perfect for a balcony to me! It seems strange to not have to stake it, but so far it seems pretty happy as well, with lots of flowers starting to bloom so I should have some tomatoes to try in no time at all. I may well have more tomatoes than I know what to do with soon! Let’s hope I can keep the caterpillars away this year!

Your balcony garden is looking great Liz! On ours we are currently growing stevia, basil and mint. The stevia is suffering a little in the heat but the others doing very well! 🙂

Your system looks fabulous, very similar to one I installed a little while ago! http://bit.ly/1tSqa56
In my experience, the Cap’s work better in the ground than in pots, but I would love to see what happpens at your place!

I’m thinking the cap might need to be transplanted into a larger pot but I shall see what happens! It’s all a bit of trial and error in my gardening adventures!

Herbs on the balcony are the best! We have mint, thyme, lemon thyme and rosemary on ours! Cooking is so much more fun when you can pick fresh herbs!

Aren’t home grown herbs the best! I’ve just added some Vietnamese mint over the weekend as well, I eat a lot of Vietnamese food over summer so I’m sure it will get a workout!
