Pubs for Vegetarians: Little Creatures Dining Hall

The next stop on my tour of vegetarian friendly pubs was the Little Creatures Dining Hall on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. Little Creatures are a brewery based in Fremantle, Western Australia and make drinks such as the Little Creatures beers, Pipsqueak ciders and White Rabbit beers. The dining hall in Melbourne is a large space, set up like a German beer hall and serves breakfast (on weekends only), lunch and dinner as well as obviously stocking all their alcoholic beverages.

We visited on a Friday night and waited at the bar for a few minutes until a table was ready. Luckily one was available in the front section, which is the only ‘room’ other than the main hall, so is slightly quieter. We got a spot next to the open fire so happily started to defrost from the Melbourne winter outside.

The menu is set-up for sharing with a range of bar snacks, pizzas and other shared dishes, with a handful of dishes that are classified as ‘fly solo’. None of these are vegetarian friendly however, so we stuck to the first part of the menu!

There are lots of vegetarian pizzas and a couple of the other dishes were also meat-free so there was plenty of choice. We started with a serve of the Fresh Cut Chips with Garlic Aioli ($9) which turned out to be a rather large serving of thin-cut, well cooked chips. They were quite salty but the aioli provided a good balance, and there were lots of crunchy chips which always keeps me happy!

Next we had the Beetroot, Pumpkin & Goats Cheese Salad ($15.50) which I really liked. It was a good sized serving and a nice balance of all the ingredients. It annoys me when salads are too heavy on the greens and light on the other ingredients, but this had plenty of everything and was really delicious. A good counterpoint to the salty chips as well!

Our final dish was the Eggplant, Basil & Mozzarella Pizza ($18) which was a thin-crusted pizza with a generous amount of both the eggplant and mozzarella and not too heavy on the sauce. Although it was kind of expensive for a pub pizza it was really tasty and a good serving size as well.

Overall I really like the Little Creatures Dining Hall. It can get very busy and noisy on Friday and Saturday nights so if that’s not your thing maybe visit for lunch or during the week. A good proportion of their menu is vegetarian, particularly on the pizza front and the service is always friendly and attentive, without being over the top or feeling rushed. Plus, they do great beers and ciders so that always helps! I recommend a visit!

Have you tried any of the Little Creatures offerings before? Would you be tempted to eat there?

It’s delicious cider isn’t it?! The bright ale is one of my go-to beers as well. Top stuff!

I love coming here on warm summer afternoons. It’s a shame that they don’t have a huge range of vegetarian dishes but I’d happily order a couple of servings of their chips and aioli!

At least the veggie dishes they do are delicious and there is enough choice in the pizzas to keep it interesting! Plus, the chips are really good and that’s what is really important!
