Recipe: Paprika Popcorn

Popcorn and I had a bit of a rough start. I never liked the rainbow popcorn that was always brought out at parties when I was a kid, I found it bland and somewhat stale tasting (in fact, there’s every chance it was actually stale!). I did love the caramel covered popcorn you could buy in little bags, but it was something we had very rarely in my house. In fact, I remember one time my sister and I finally convinced mum to buy one of those boxes that contained a mixture of plain, cheese and caramel popcorn, and when we got it home we discovered it didn’t even have any of the caramel flavour. Devastating stuff when you’re a little kid! These days B and I will sometimes share a popcorn if we’re at the movies, but considered what goes into that stuff it’s definitely a sometimes food!

I decided that I should try making my own popcorn at home, that way I can flavour it however I like and control the amount of salt I consume. It’s such a great snack food and easy to make at home (even without popcorn maker!), so now that I have given it a go I think I’ll be playing with all kinds of flavour combinations from now on! This one however, is a smoky, slightly spicy, savoury snack (alliteration ahoy!) – definitely full of more flavour than that rainbow rubbish!

Ingredients List

  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernals
  • 2-3 tbs coconut oil
  • 2tsp paprika
  • Pinch cayenne pepper
  • Pinch salt

Steps

  1. Heat the coconut oil in a heavy based saucepan (enough to cover the base)
  2. Add the popcorn and spices, shake to evenly distribute and then cover. Leave the lid slightly ajar to allow the steam to escape, but make sure it’s on firmly enough to stop the popcorn escaping!
  3. Leave to pop for about 5 minutes, shaking occasionally to make sure non of the kernals stick to the bottom.
  4. When the popping slows, remove from the heat and then pour into a serving bowl. Add additional paprika and salt to taste
  5. Enjoy!

Ew yeah that coloured popcorn did always taste stale. I love homemade though! We should have a movie popcorn night when I’m back. Movie marathon even!
