It’s been quite some time since I’ve shared a restaurant review here on I Spy Plum Pie, but I’m rectifying that today! While my sister, Pip, stayed with me we decided to hit up a local cafe for brunch and settled on Archie’s All Day, up on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy. I’d been up for a drink not long after it opened but was yet to sample the menu, so I was keen try it out. It’s always busy on the weekends, so my expectations were set pretty high!
We were lucky enough to get a table outside on the street straight away, as it got rather busy not long after we sat down! We started with our regular drink orders, a long black ($3.80) for Pip and a soy flat white ($4.50) for me.
The coffee was excellent, creamy, delicious and just the right amount of bitterness. Pip had been missing Melbourne coffee so this really hit the spot for her!
Then it was over to the food! There were a number of vegetarian friendly options on the menu, including a granola, french toast and smashed avocado. A few of the savoury choices had the option of adding something like bacon or chorizo which I think is a great way to make your menu work for more people.
Pip ordered the Huevos Sucios ($17.50) which consisted of fried eggs, black beans, tater tots, jalapeno spiked Monterrey Jack, avocado and tomatillo salsa and chipotle mayo. She was very happy with her choice, it was definitely full of flavour and very filling! The dish had a good amount of kick to it, but it was well balanced with the creamy avocado and the crispy fried eggs. I was able to sneak a bite to try and would have happily eaten this dish too!
I went with the Chickpea Hommus ($16) which came with sprouted beans, harissa labne, fried eggs and flatbread. This was another super tasty dish, jam packed with textures, flavours and colour. The harissa labne was nice and spicy but worked really well with the smooth hummus and crunchy beans. The flatbread was great for mopping up the sauces and the runny yolk of the eggs (which were cooked perfectly!) and was a nice change from the sourdough that comes with most Melbourne breakfasts. It was an interesting, delicious dish and one that I would order again for sure.
We left feeling delightfully full and happy with our choices, and we were very glad that we arrived before the crowds descended. When we walked past again a few hours later there was a line outside waiting for tables, so be warned if you’re going to go eat there! And you should go eat there!
