Review: Gabriel, Fitzroy II

Given the lack of opportunity to sit down and eat in restaurants and cafes over the last 18 months it’s probably no surprise I haven’t shared as many reviews as usual! While I wait for the opportunity to do it again (hopefully soon!) I thought I would rectify that with another review of Gabriel on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy!

These dishes are from multiple visits over the last while, so not everything is currently on their menu. In fact, it’s one of the things I like most about Gabriel – the menu is relatively short but changes regularly. It’s always well labelled too, with vegetarian and vegan friendly options clearly marked.

The coffee is always excellent too – depending on the time of year I order a cold brew or a long black and they are always top notch.

In fact, during Melbourne’s long lockdown last year Gabriel was one of my go-to local spots for takeaway coffee too. They also had prepared meals, pastries, toasties and even grocery items so they were a great source of deliciousness even if I couldn’t sit down and enjoy it.

As for the food, they always have a seasonal take on avocado on toast and it’s hard to go past. This one came with hummus, pickled veggies, greens and toasted nuts which was such a winning combination. The mix of textures and flavours was spot on, and it was a much more interesting take on avocado toast than you often find!

One of my favourite things to order whenever it’s on the menu is their chilli eggs. These folded eggs were seriously excellent, with the chilli well distributed throughout, and packing a good punch too. It’s a classic dish for a reason, and they always nail it! They were a favourite the first time I reviewed Gabriel and I’m sure I will continue to order their take on chilli eggs for a long time to come!

My most recent visit I also went for the avocado toast, but look how different it was! Artichoke hummus, kale and silverbeet, lots of avocado and topped with dukkah. It was another excellent combination of flavours and textures, with the artichoke hummus and light rye bread adding a great spin on a traditional avo toast. I was very happy with my choice, that’s for sure!

It’s safe to say I highly recommend you add Gabriel to your list of cafes to visit when things open up again. The food and coffee are excellent and the staff are super friendly – what more could you want!
