Review: Industry Beans, Fitzroy

It’s been a while since I shared a food review on the blog but after a recent Saturday lunch at Industry Beans I thought it was time to change that! It’s a cafe I had been meaning to try for ages so when I found myself in the vicinity while out doing some Saturday shopping with my parents we headed on in for a feed!

Industry Beans is, as the name suggests, also a coffee roaster and you can pick up bags of all kinds of blends in store and on line, including equipment and reusable cups. The cafe itself is really lovely, with an courtyard out the front and a decent sized converted warehouse space inside as well. The menu changes seasonally which I always appreciate, and there are plenty of vegan and vegetarian options as well.

Mum went with the Crispy Beans and Quinoa ($19) which came with chilli pickle, avocado, tomato, spanish onion, puffed grains and a pea-dusted poached egg. It was a very pretty dish and more importantly, a delicious one! Mum really enjoyed the textures and flavours in the dish and it definitely filled her up. A winning dish!

Dad ordered the Coffee Rubbed Wagyu Burger ($23) with Polenta Chips ($4). The burger came with chilli jam, cheddar and pickles on a brioche bun and it must have been delicious as it certainly didn’t hang around for long! I managed to snag half a polenta chip which was delicious – light and fluffy on the inside, crunchy on the outside and lightly dusted in a green tea sea salt which was excellent.

I went with the Kale Kimchi Bowl ($22) with an added pea-dusted poached egg ($4). The bowl contained all kinds of deliciousness, including cashew butter, puffed grains, pickled beetroot, activated charcoal puree and cauliflower. It was another gorgeous looking dish and I loved all the flavours on the plate. The cauliflower was particularly delicious, as was the cashew butter, and I’ll never turn down pickled beetroot! The mix of grains provided some excellent texture, and whilst the addition of the egg made this a fairly pricy lunch it was well worth it.

Despite being known for their coffee I didn’t actually have one on this visit, but my folks did and were very happy with it. Instead, I went for a homemade ginger beer which was refreshing, zingy and just what the doctor ordered. I’ll have to go back to try a coffee though!

Overall we had a really lovely lunch and it’s definitely somewhere I would go back to. It’s a busy, popular place so be prepared for a wait if you arrive during peak times on the weekend.
