It’s not often I visit cafes on the south side of the river (I’m usually too hungry to venture far!) but one Sunday recently we found ourselves doing exactly that, so stopped in at Miss Alex & Co on Brighton Road for a feed.
The cafe is small but manages to fit in plenty of tables spread across two rooms and out on the street (mainly taken up by cyclists!). The staff were relaxed but incredibly friendly and we happily settled into a table to peruse the menu.
I started with my normal soy flat white ($4) which was really well made with a nice crema and just the right amount of bitterness.
B got his regular as well, an English Breakfast Tea ($4) which came on this gorgeous tray, complete with a set of egg timers which indicated when to pour the tea based on how strong you like it. Nifty! He was very happy with the tea as well, good quality loose leaf is always preferred over teabags!
Then it was on to the main event – the food! I ordered the Crepe Roll ($17) which they were happy to alter for me to make it vegetarian friendly, switching out the ham for spinach, to go with the asparagus, tarragon hollandaise sauce and a panko crumbed poached egg on top.
This was such a nice alternative to a regular brunch, the crepes were really light and fluffy and the hollandaise sauce was deliciously tangy. The panko crusted egg was perfectly cooked and the yolk oozed delightfully over the crepes. I’m very glad they were happy to make a vegetarian version of this as it was an excellent brunch!
B ordered the Smashed Avocado ($17) which was served on jalapeño corn bread with herbed mushrooms, persian feta, truss tomatoes, to which he added an egg ($2.50). He was incredibly happy with this choice as well, it was almost a big breakfast with all the flavours going on, and beautifully presented as well. The corn bread was a nice change from the sourdough that is on most menus and the egg was again perfectly cooked.
The cabinet at the front was full of delicious looking pastries and scrolls which seemed to be very popular with people getting takeaway coffees but unfortunately we were too full to consider anything else, so we’ll have to go back I think!
All in all we had a really lovely meal and I was very impressed with the service, so I would highly recommend paying them a visit if you find yourself in the area and in need of a feed!
