I first reviewed South of Johnston years ago, but I’ve eaten there a few times lately so thought it was about time for another review! Given its proximity to my place it’s somewhere I go quite a bit, and for good reason! The food is delicious, the coffee is excellent and the staff are super friendly too!
The only downside is that it’s a super popular cafe, so getting a table can be a challenge. Anyway, here’s a few of the dishes I’ve enjoyed lately!
Roasted mushrooms on toast with pumpkin hummus, dukkah & olive oil, and an added egg ($15 + $2). This dish was really delicious – the mushrooms were tender, the pumpkin hummus creamy and the dukkah added an excellent crunch. It was filling without being too heavy and really fuelled me up for a busy day ahead.
Next up was the chilli scrambled eggs with spring onions and feta, which they happily swapped in roasted mushrooms for the salmon for me ($21). In fact, that’s one of my favourite things about South of Johnston – they have heaps of vegetarian options but are also willing to alter the menu as well. These scrambled eggs were simple yet delicious – creamy eggs with just a little kick of chilli. A breakfast classic done well!
The last dish I’ve tried in recent weeks is probably my favourite of all! Southern style baked beans on sourdough toast with roasted corn salsa, tomato & crushed avocado, with an added egg ($19 + $2). This was seriously delicious! The beans are full of flavour and served with a slightly spicy, charred salsa and plenty of avo as well. The ratio of all the elements was spot on and I’ve since recommended this dish to multiple people who have also loved it. They do a vegan version which is equally as delicious! Definitely worth ordering!
The coffee at Sojo is always great as well, and I’ve had my fair share of long blacks ($4) in recent weeks. Each one of them has been spot on and made me a very happy camper.
All the coffees!
If you’re yet to give South of Johnston a try I highly recommend you do – although maybe try for mid week if you don’t want to wait for a table!
