September Favourite Finds

Here we are at the end of another month! It’s been another rather crazy one work-wise for me, but the start of Spring and the return of gorgeous weather has definitely helped. I’ve made sure to get out and about as much as possible which has been lovely, as well as learning some new skills. I’d love to hear your September favourite finds as well!

Native Flowers Workshop

Right at the start of the month a friend and I headed to a Laneways Learning class hosted by Miss Emily focussed on making wild arrangements using native Australian plants. It was SO much fun! I really love natives and it was so great to spend an evening playing around with them and learning about how best to arrange flowers to make it them not only look great but stay together, and alive, for longer. The flowers are still going strong which is pretty impressive and made the workshop most definitely value for money.

I highly recommend you keeping an eye on the Laneway Learning website as they run classes in lots of cities across Australia (as well as Auckland and Singapore) and they cover pretty much anything you can imagine, so there’s guaranteed to be something of interest to you at some point! Most of the classes are under $15 as well which is excellent value and they are a great way to spend an evening!

Sustainable House Day

One sunny Sunday I headed out to visit some houses as part of Sustainable House Day with my parents, which was both incredibly interesting and inspiring. The event works by people just volunteering to open up their homes and give tours showing off their sustainable features and it includes everything from fancy architect-designed new builds to very low-budget DIY changes, and we went to houses that covered that entire spectrum!

One of the things I really liked was it reinforced to me just how much of a difference a combination of small, easy, inexpensive changes can have to the sustainability of your home. It also really highlighted the fact that making changes to improve the eco-performance of a home also makes it a nicer space to be in, which is obviously incredibly important as well! I highly recommend you pop the next event in your calendar, and you can still read up on the houses that were on show on their website which is a great starting point! If you’d like to hear more about any of the houses I visited just let me know.

Recycled Wood Mirror

Speaking of Sustainable House Day, I was lucky enough to win a prize for attending! It is this absolutely gorgeous recycled wood mirror from Mulbury, who just happen to be a local store to where I live which makes it even more sustainable! I was very excited when they let me know I had won, and even more so when I got to pick it up! Now I’m just working out the best place to hang it in my apartment, it needs to be pride of place somewhere I think!

Dulse Flakes

Last but not least of my September favourites is dulse flakes! I’ve eaten them a little in the past but I’ve gone a little savoury-food crazy lately and I think these might just be to blame. Dulse flakes are quite simply flakes made from the dulse seaweed and you can sprinkle them on pretty much anything – salads, in soups, on homemade popcorn, you name it. The best part is they not only give a delicious salty flavour boost but they are full of nutritional value as well – antioxidants, vitamins A, C, E, vitamin B12 (which is important for vegetarians), iron, calcium, the list goes on! I get mine from a local health food store and luckily they aren’t too expensive because I’ve been using them like they’re going out of style!
