Whilst in Slovenia I headed out to Lake Bled for a couple of nights and found myself in a town so beautiful it looks like it’s from a fairytale. It’s only a short, easy bus ride from Ljubljana so if you’re thinking of heading to Slovenia then you must put it on your to do list!
The town is at the foothills of the Julian alps, giving it a breathtaking setting from pretty much every angle. Most of the shops and restaurants are located on the north-eastern end of the lake, with views towards the medieval Bled Castle perched on the top of the cliff, and the Church of the Assumption located on an island in the lake.
A visit to Lake Bled can be as active or relaxing as you want it to be – there are lots of delicious places to eat, galleries to explore and museums to visit, as well as plenty of hikes, water sports and even tobogganing to do.
I had a mixed bag of weather the few days I was there – lots of overcast days with breaks of both rain and sunshine, but it didn’t stop me getting out and about and doing lots of exploring. Unfortunately there wasn’t much point hiking up to the lookout points given the low cloud cover but even from ground level Lake Bled is a breathtaking place.
One absolute must do is to walk the entire way around the lake – it’s a flat, paved path the entire way around and there are lots of places to stop to take in the views, or grab a bite to eat. The view of the castle and church, as well as the stunning backdrop of the Alps changes as you make your way around the Lake, and each new view is as beautiful as the last!
Another must-do is to head up to Bled Castle which has been perched 130m above the lake since 1011, making it the oldest castle in Slovenia. It’s open 7 days a week and costs €10 to enter. Inside you’ll find an interesting museum about the history of Bled as well as a restaurant, printing works, forge and chapel.
The castle itself is incredibly interesting, but one of its real draw cards is the view back over the lake, which unsurprisingly is incredible.
You might have to jostle a few people to get a good spot, but it’s well worth it (even if the weather isn’t playing nice!).
It is possible to get over to the church on the island either by renting a boat yourself, or paying one of the many paddle-boat operators to take you over. I decided against it as I had heard that the views of the church are better than back the other way and I was running out of good light, but if you have been over I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Lake Bled was probably one of the most beautiful places I have ever been and I would highly recommend you put it on your to-travel list. I imagine it would get pretty busy on weekends and in summer, but regardless it will still be equally stunning!
I stayed at a gorgeous bed & breakfast called Penzion Mayer which was located in a little area of similar styles of homes and accomodation, making it feel much like a ski village. The room was clean and comfortable, the staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast included pretty much anything you could want. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re thinking of heading to Lake Bled for a few nights!
