Sustainable and Functional Lunchbox Options for Adults

I’m a big fan of taking my lunch to work and bring food from home almost every day. Not only does it save me a ridiculous amount of money (seriously, $11 for a crappy sandwich? No thanks!) but it guarantees I will have something delicious and hearty ready to eat when lunchtime rolls around. The only tricky part is that I walk to work, so whatever I am bringing needs to be in a sturdy, well sealed container to make sure there’s no unfortunate spillages along the way!

Bringing lunch from home can also have another huge benefit in cutting down the amount of waste we produce as you can re-use the same containers over and over, and you shouldn’t need to use clingwrap or plastic bags either. So today I thought I’d share with you some of the different lunchbox options that I use to transport food to work. You can believe me when I say these are tried and tested, I’ve been doing this a while!

First up is this sandwich pouch from 4MyEarth. I don’t eat sandwiches very often but find this really handy if I want to bring a few pieces of bread to have with some soup, or some tortilla chips to go with a mexican salad. Its a great little size, easily fits a few pieces of sourdough or the like and keeps the bread nice and fresh. 4MyEarth do all kinds of food storage options including bags, pouches, covers and wraps so they are definitely worth checking out, and you can find them online here.

Nude Food Movers are another company that has a huge range of options including containers of all sizes and shapes, water bottles and freezer packs, but my favourite are these stackable snack tubes. They’re perfect for a few handfuls of nuts or dried fruit, a serving of dip or to separately transport your dressing to make sure your salad doesn’t go soggy by lunchtime. They don’t leak and are surprisingly spacious, I’m always finding more ways to use these and they come to and from work with me all the time. Highly recommended.

A more recent addition to my lunchbox arsenal is this stainless steel tiffin from Lunchbox Mania. I have the two-tier version but it also comes in a three-tier or a square version in single or double-tier. What I love most about having the two tiers is it means I don’t have to worry about bringing separate containers if I have something a bit on the messy side (a curry for example) as well as a side salad, or sliced fruit for a snack. Instead, I can just stack them on top of each other and away we go!

Last but not least I have a range of containers from Sistema of varying shapes and sizes which I use all the time to store things in my fridge or freezer, as well as to transport food to work. They are BPA free which is very important, last a long time and stay very firmly shut which is obviously pretty vital! I also have a bit of a soft spot for them as they are a New Zealand company, but that’s probably just me!

So there you have it folks, some of my favourite sustainable AND functional lunchbox options for transporting my food to work. One isn’t much use without the other!

I nearly always bring lunch to work (usually leftovers from the night before) and am obsessed with the Sistema containers. It’s really important to me that it’s BPA free, and these are really good quality too.

I also bring a green smoothie which I have in a mason jar with a lid on it + a coffee in a keep cup. It’s so good to have so many sustainable options, and I don’t mind saving lunch money each day x

When I was a lad, my mum would wrap my packed lunch in greaseproof paper. It was more environmentally friendly than plastic wrap, snaplock bags or foil, but it used to unfold in my school bag!
Love the steel stackers by the way. Must get some!

Yikes, that sounds messy! Environmentally friendly, but messy! Definitely check out lunchbox mania, I love mine and given their range of options I’m sure you’d find one to suit your needs!
