The Foodie Files – Dancing Through Sunday

For this month’s Foodie Files chat I’m delighted to bring you Bec, from Dancing Through Sunday fame. A fellow inner-city Melbournite Bec has an intense love for brunch which I definitely understand & her instagram feed is always full of amazing food snaps both from at home and out and about. This lady’s food photography is top notch, I wish I had her skills, that’s for sure!

So, over to Bec!

Do you have a philosophy towards food?

My philosophy towards food is about eating real food. Real food, most of the time. I love cooking from scratch, learning how to make sauces form scratch and shopping from local markets. I love learning new things in the kitchen, challenging myself, using new ingredients and trying new cuisines. I also love beer and hot chips – it’s alll about balance.

What’s your favourite food memory?

I still remember my mum teaching me how to make cheesy mash potatoes when I was 7. I was standing on a chair so I could reach the bench, mashing my little heart out.  She taught me how to cook and has inspired mty love for cooking for others and damn good food. Cooking with, and for people has been a passion for as long as I can remember.

Do you have a go-to food of choice?

If it’s my every-day lunches or dinners, I like food packed with flavour and nutrients. I try to get veggies into every meal including breakfast, as it makes sure I’m full of energy for the day ahead. I’d much rather go for something savoury over sweet any time of the day. I have a penchant for white (read: bad) carbs so give me a bowl of Spaghetti Napoli, Gnocchi, mash potato or hot chips and I am one happy gal. Again, it’s all in moderation though.

What’s your favourite meal of the day?

I love breakfast (or on weekends, brunch). I love waking up and taking the time in the mornings to have a quit moment over some tasty eggs on toast or a big plate full of green. Come the weekend, it’s out and about in Lovely Fitzroy or Collingwood to lap up one of the many fantastic cafes.

What’s the strangest food you’re ever eaten (and would you eat it again?!)

Ooo… being vegetarian for 5 years has crossed out any type of offal or weird meats – I don’t think I could ever eat that type of stuff. I did once have a dish of sauteed cactus and queso (cheese) at Mesa verde in the city and it was delicious. It was the first time I’ve eaten a cactus – that’s for sure.

If you were showing a visitor around town for a weekend where would be your must-eat destinations?

Archies all day on Gertrude St for the Huevos Sucios ‘Dirty Eggs’. Two perfectly fried eggs are sitting atop tater tots (aka Potato Gems), all stuck together with melted Monterry Jack cheese, pinto beans, avocado, tomatillo salsa and chipotle sauce. Yes please, thankyou. Then a stroll down Smith St, Brunswick St and pop into Bimbos for a quick $4 Pizza or Mr Scruffs on Smith St for a delicious veggie burger & bloody mary. I’d then go into the city and either visit Hu Tong for the Melbourne Classic Dumpling experience, Pellegrinis for old school Italian, MoVida for a special night and a tasty food adventure through Spain or try you luck at Mamasita’s for mexican that packs a punch.
