Welcome to the second instalment of my Foodie Files series! If you missed instalment one, I chatted to the delightful Spoonful of Sarah and now I’m here chatting to the lovely Tara from VegeTARAian! Tara is a fellow vegetarian (hence her excellent blog name!) who resides in Sydney, and whilst we’re yet to meet in person I have no doubt that when that time comes we will get on like we’ve known each other for years!
Over on VegeTARAian you will find all kinds of fantastic recipes, as well as Tara’s travel adventures, great interviews and really informative posts about all kinds of related topics. It’s by far one of my favourite blogs to visit! So, let’s chat to the lovely Tara shall we?!
Do you have a philosophy towards food?
The more I learn about food, the more interested I am in fresh produce and cooking from scratch which is much easier (and way more flavoursome) than I’d thought. In an ideal world we’d all shop at local farmers markets and buy seasonal produce which would support and promote the growers in our area.
What’s your favourite food memory?
When I was growing up, sometimes Ma would bake beautiful sweets for my sister and I like butterfly cupcakes with cream, jam-filled Victoria sponges dusted with icing sugar and rich chocolate cakes slathered in chocolate icing. This didn’t happen all the time but when it did, I recall being so delighted and impressed by these lovingly-made treats.
Do you have a go-to food of choice?
I’m all about simple food that doesn’t take long to make so for the easiest of snacks I love a slice of quality sourdough with avocado and tomato, seasoned with salt and pepper.
What’s your favourite meal of the day?
Brunch, especially when there’s no need to be anywhere. You can kick back and take your time, sit around chatting with friends or go it solo and read the paper. Visiting a local favourite or trying a new cafe is always a weekend highlight.
What’s the strangest food you’re ever eaten (and would you eat it again?!)
On a recent visit to Malaysia I experienced a first – I tried the love it or hate it fruit durian. It certainly wasn’t as horrible or foul-smelling as I’d expected and while I didn’t find the taste or texture terrible, it’s probably not something I’d opt to have again.
If you were showing a visitor around town for a weekend where would be your must-eat destinations?
Oh that’s a tough one as Sydney has so many great eats. I’d probably take them to Surry Hills or Newtown as these really interesting areas with loads of dining options of different cuisines and eatery styles, to suit all budgets.
Where can people follow your food (and other!) adventures?
I’m on far too many channels! I really should just stick to one or two. These are all the places I live online.
