Washington DC Eating: Maiz64

If you follow me on Instagram you’ll be well aware I just spent the last few weeks visiting my sister in Washington DC. It was my first trip to the States and it’s safe to say we ate well while I was there! I thought I would share some of the best meals we had, starting with dinner at Maiz64!

Our dinner at Maiz64 was on night two of our trip, and we were determined to try as many of the vegetarian options on the menu we could! It was also my first exposure to the fact cocktails in the USA are basically the same price as wine, so I quickly got on the bandwagon and tried a couple of different margarita options all of which were delicious!

On to the food! First up was the Veggie Tostada ($14) which was topped with a tomato and pumpkin seed sauce, jicama, bell peppers, seaweed, cucumber, red onion and more. It was a really interesting mix of flavours and textures, not at all what I was expecting but certainly delicious! I find tostadas a messy thing to eat, but this was certainly worth it!

Next up was the Broccoli Taco ($14) which was served with black mole and cashews. These were seriously delicious. The broccoli had an excellent char to it, and the black mole sauce was thick and smoky. The tortillas were also excellent – I had been watching them make them while we waited for our table so I knew they were going to be fresh and delicious! These tacos were a firm favourite for all of us – it was lucky we ordered enough for one each!

Our next dish was the Corn Tamal ($16) – steamed sweet corn with charred tomatillo sauce, goat cheese sauce, pecorino cheese and greens. This was cheesy and creamy although the greens on top helped bring some excellent freshness to the dish. The corn itself was perfectly cooked and the sweetness worked really well with the smooth, rich sauce. An excellent dish, particularly in combination with the broccoli tacos!

We thought a salad might be a good thing to throw in the mix and so went with the Beet and Citrus Salad ($16). The combination of roasted beets, orange, grapefruit, pistachios, carrots and goats cheese was an excellent choice! It was fresh, flavourful and was the perfect choice to go with our other dishes.

Last but not least was the Roasted Cauliflower ($22) which was served with brown butter, peanut and sesame mole and charred leek. I love a roast cauliflower and this certainly didn’t disappoint. The peanut and sesame mole was creamy and the cauliflower was tender but also nicely charred. The addition of the leek was also excellent as well, but the sauce was the real highlight!

All in all we had a delicious dinner at Maiz 64. The staff were friendly and helpful, the atmosphere was excellent and it was an excellent way to fight jetlag and start our USA adventures!

If you find yourself in Washington DC I highly recommend a visit to Maiz64!
