Wintery Weekend Adventures: Phillip Island

Last weekend B and I headed down to his family’s holiday house on Phillip Island for a little getaway. It was very different from our last visit in February which was all about picnics and ocean swimming, this time we were much more rugged up and most of our weekend was focussed on food, which was quite fine by me! Warning – lots of photos to come!

We headed down after work on Friday night and picked up some tempura veggies and chips from White Salt which does some of the best chips I have eaten anywhere. An excellent way to start the weekend!

On Saturday we headed back on to the mainland and drove to the town of Koonwarra. Our first stop was their farmers market store where I happily browsed for a while before picking up some organic purple carrots, kale and mandarins to take home with us. B was amazed at how excited I was by a veggie shop, but the produce was so good it was worth getting excited about!

We then visited the Koonwarra Store, and taste-tested the amazing jams, chutneys, chocolates and cheese while we waited for a table for lunch. We also had a wander through the gallery and shop next door which was full of gorgeous bits and pieces.

A table was then ready for us and we shared an amazing cheese platter and some homemade scones, with some local wine. It was all very delicious and it was obvious why this little store was so popular! Highly recommend a visit if you ever find yourself in that part of the Bass Coast. A jar of chutney may have also been added to my loot and come home with me!

In case we hadn’t eaten enough that day, we also went out for dinner to The Foreshore Restaurant in Rhyll which didn’t have a whole heap of vegetarian options but they were happy to make changes to the specials of the day to make them vegetarian, so we were more than adequately catered for. B had the pasta special and I had a Mediterranean stew and we were both very happy with our choices!

Somehow we woke up on Sunday needing more food, so went out to brunch in Cowes where I had delicious poached eggs with avocado, spinach & tomato at Rumbles Cafe. Super lovely staff there as well!

We then went wandering in the sunshine and went out on the pier in Cowes and also found an antique store with some amazing homewares, furniture, records and even a Kermit & Miss Piggy arcade game! We spent ages wandering around in there, with B picking up some new records to add to his collection!

We also headed out to the Nobbies to see if we could spot some whales or seals but unfortunately none were to be found. We did see some pretty beautiful scenery and some rather scary looking waves crashing on to the rocks. Can’t really blame the seals for not wanting to be down there!

Phew, that was a lot of photos! It was another wonderful weekend and such a peaceful place to spend a few days. I always feel so relaxed when we get back to Melbourne.

How was your weekend? Did you explore anywhere new?
