7 Tips to Drink More Water

We all know that drinking water is good for us as it not only keeps us hydrated but is also good for our skin, kidneys, bowels and muscles. However, sometimes we find it tricky to drink as much as we should so I’m here to help out with my top 7 tips to drink more water!

7 Tips to Drink More Water

I’ve always been a big water drinking, growing up we mainly had water at meal times and I’ve carried that through to today, so it’s rare I wouldn’t get my 8 glasses in! Here are some of the best ways to help you get to that point as well!

1. Make It A Morning Habit

Starting your morning with a large glass of water (with or without added lemon) is an excellent way to not only kick your day off on the right foot but also ticks off some of your water intake for the day. Making it an morning habit means you don’t even have to think about it, it will just happen! Try and make it the very first thing you do in the morning, that way you will generally be able to squeeze a second glass in before you leave for work as well.

2. Buy Yourself A Nice Bottle

I keep a bottle of water at work and have another that I carry around with me on the weekends and in the evening, so the best thing is to buy a nice water bottle that you won’t mind using again and again. Glass or stainless steel are the best options as they are easy to clean, safe to reuse and much nicer to drink out of than plastic. Biome^ has a great selection if you’re looking for something nice, with a range of tops including some with built in straws, so there is something for everyone!

3. Make It Handy

The best way to help yourself drink more water is to make it as easy as possible – if you have to go out of your way to get more water it just won’t happen! As I mentioned before, I keep a bottle with me at all times so I can just sip away while I’m working or out and about. A jug of water and a glass on your desk is also an excellent option so you can keep refilling your glass without having to traipse back to the kitchen after every glass. I even drink from a bottle at home so I can carry it around and not forget to stay hydrated!

4. Add Some Flavour

If you’re not a fan of plain ol’ water, or need to mix things up during the day, then try adding some flavour through the addition of fresh fruits or herbs. I particularly like cucumber and lemon when I’m after something extra refreshing, but orange or strawberry work well too, as does mint. Some of my favourite combos are in my Healthy Drinks e-book which you can get your hands on if you join my newsletter list (or in the shop). There’s lots of other delicious drinks in it too!

5. Eat Your Water

One slightly different way to up your water intake is to eat it! This could be through adding fruits and veggies with a high-water content like cucumber, watermelon, lettuce, celery, tomatoes, capsicum, strawberries and cantaloupe into your daily diet. Another great way, particularly in summer, is to make some delicious homemade icy poles using fresh fruits or coconut water as the base and to snack on those instead! It still counts as part of your water intake even if you eat it, I promise!

6. Track Your Drinking

If you’re struggling to get enough water in then one way to help is to track your drinking to make it clear when you’re hitting your target and when you might need to make some changes. There a whole host of ways you can do this, ranging from the low-tech end where you mark your bottle with hourly increments you want to meet to the more high-tech through the use of an app, or through any other tracking you might use (the fitbit app has a spot for your water intake for example). Find a way that works for you and stick to it for a few weeks and I’m sure you’ll see a change in your water intake!

7. Drink Whenever You Eat

A great habit to get into is to pour yourself a large glass of water to drink whenever you sit down to eat – breakfast, lunch, dinner, morning tea, you name it! By doing this you’ll get at least 3 large glasses in a day, plus the one you’ll have when you first wake up, so you’ll be well on the way to meeting your daily intake! Drinking water with your meals also stops you from having sugary options instead, and is good for your digestion as well. In fact, whenever you find yourself hungry you should first have a glass of water, as you may well be thirsty rather than hungry, and even if you’re not the extra water can’t hurt!

There we have it, my top 7 tips to drink more water! I’d love to hear your tips in the comments as well!

I recently brought a bottle with hourly markings on it and it has really helped. Stating early in the morning has been a massive help for me too. Thanks for inspiring me to keep it up. Mel xx
