August Favourite Finds 2016

Another month is coming to a close so it’s time for my August favourite finds! As usual it’s an eclectic bunch here at ISPP, and I’d love to hear about anything excellent you’ve found or done this month as well. Sharing is caring after all!

Peace, Love & Vegetables

I’ve been on a fermented foods kick this month and these Super-Kraut varieties from Peace, Love & Vegetables have been getting quite the workout in my kitchen. They’re both absolutely delicious and I have been adding them to pretty much everything – with my eggs at breakfast, in salad wraps, on burgers, you name it! My gut is much happier for it, as are my tastebuds! I bought these at my local health food store and they have lots of other varieties, so I can see a few more coming home with me in coming weeks!

Daffodils and Jonquils

It feels like Spring is most definitely nearly upon us, particularly thanks to the abundance of daffodils and jonquils popping up everywhere this month. I’ve loved having them around my house, and at $4 a bunch they don’t break the bank either! I went one step further this year and even have some in a pot on my balcony which is providing me no end of joy, I highly recommend some for your garden too!

August Favourite Finds 2016 | I Spy Plum PieJanis Joplin – Little Girl Blue

This month I went along to see the Janis Joplin documentary Little Girl Blue that was screening as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival and absolutely loved it. I realised quite quickly how little I knew about her, other than her music and her untimely death at just 27, but the film really showed how incredibly talented she was. It includes lots of interviews with her friends and family as well as a whole lot of footage of her performing, and her personal letters, so you really got a sense of what she was like. I highly recommend you keep an eye out for a screening near you!

New(ish) Local Haunts

Despite having an abundance of cafes, restaurants and pubs in close proximity to where I live I often find myself heading back to the same places again and again, but this month I visited a few of the newer kids on the block. I’m so glad I did! While I was away the first Gontran Cherrier in Melbourne opened which is both delicious and dangerous! The range of pastries is impressive and the almond croissant was seriously delicious, but the bread is equally as interesting and tasty. The loaf in the photo below is miso rye and it made for the most delicious breakfasts for a whole week!

August Favourite Finds 2016 | I Spy Plum Pie Another newbie to the suburb is Neko Neko, a cute little Japanese restaurant which has a great number of vegan and vegetarian friendly dishes on the menu. I gave their agedashi tofu a try and it was served with the prettiest array of vegetables and pickles on the side – I wish all my food looked that pretty! Thankfully it wasn’t all just style, it was delicious too! An excellent reminder to break out of my routines and try new places!

I need to start fermenting my own veggies I think, but I’m a little worried it will take over my kitchen!

Oh I love PL&K superkraut! Oh and I walked by Neko Neko on Saturday and saw their sign for vegan ramen – would totally have eaten there if they were open.

Thanks a bunch for joining the My Monthly Loves link up, I hope to see you there again next month!
