Building a Smoothie

Now that I have a blender that actually, y’know, blends things, I’m back to making smoothies as my breakfast of choice most days. I love the variety and I’m always trying new combinations, but there is a rough recipe of sorts I use for all my smoothies that I thought I would share with you.

The first thing to choose is your liquid – my most common choices are:

  • almond milk
  • water
  • coconut water

Next up is adding your Fruit & Veggies and this is where the fun really happens! It really comes down to taste, and how filling you want your smoothie to be, but some of my favourite additions are:

  • something green – normally spinach or kale
  • berries – strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or a mixture, generally frozen
  • banana – fresh or frozen
  • mango, peach, pineapple or anything else I’ve got!

The final stage is adding in any Other Goodies to help with both the flavour and to make the smoothie a more well-rounded breakfast.
I have a range of seeds and powders that I add to my smoothies depending on what I’m feeling like and what flavour I’m after. Some of the additions I’m using at the moment are:

  • spirulina
  • chia seeds
  • acai powder
  • maca powder
  • raw cacao powder
  • LSA (ground linseed, sunflower seeds and almonds)

If you’re using mainly fresh fruit then you might want to add some ice cubes to help thicken the smoothie, then it’s as simple as blending it all up, pouring it in a glass and enjoying your concoction!

What are some of your favourite smoothie combinations?

I’m not a huge avocado fan so I’ve never tried it in smoothies, but maybe I should give it a go!
I’ve been following your adventures on the blog – looks like you and Billy are having a amazing time – will definitely have to come meet you somewhere later in the year!

You don’t even taste it in a smoothie, it just adds a super creaminess to it plus all the good stuff. Makes awesome ice cream too!

Yeah you definitely should. Let me know a timeish when you know!

Alrighty, next time I need an avocado for something else I will put some in a smoothie and try it out! I know it’s a great thing to make raw desserts with as well, so I may just have to get over my indifference towards it!

Oh they’re all such pretty colours!! I stupidly nearly bought a Vitamix this week – ended up safely buying a Bamix instead (long story). I don’t drink smoothies very often, I find them a bit too filling. Even the all-veg ones.. I do love looking at them though, and yours are gorgeous!!

Thanks! Some of them come out looking very unappealing but they taste good regardless. I find it a super quick and healthy breakfast before work – I often blend them up the night before to avoid waking my housemates which makes it even quicker in the morning!
Can’t wait to see what you make with your new barmix!
