Lockdown Eating: Rascal Brunswick

The hospitality sector here in Melbourne needs all the support we can give it at the moment, that’s for sure. So, I thought I would start sharing the best Lockdown Eating experiences I have had – starting with Rascal in Brunswick.

One of the things that drew me to ordering from Rascal was the fact they do serves for one – which isn’t available for many of these kinds of meals. The menu changes weekly, and deliveries are available to lots of inner suburbs (and delivery is done by the staff!).

The food comes ready to eat, but also with detailed instructions on how to reheat it if you choose as well as how to plate it up. They also pop in a candle and suggested playlist to really make it feel special, which is such a nice touch.

Most importantly, the food was delicious. For $39 it was also pretty excellent value too! The week I ordered the menu included bread with a caramelised onion butter (which was seriously good), followed by roasted celeriac with brown butter and thyme and horseradish cream as the main dish.

The main dish came with an excellent combination of side dishes, not least of all these roasted carrots served with yoghurt, marjoram salsa verde and pistachios.

The beetroot, smoked goats curd, tarragon and sherry vinaigrette salad was zesty and fresh which really helped balance out the meal. The quantities of each dish were spot on as well, there was just the right amount of everything!

The last savoury dish was one of the absolute highlights. I mean, it was a gruyere potato gratin, how could it be anything other than delicious! Cheesy, bubbly and seriously delicious. It’s probably lucky there wasn’t more of this!

For dessert I had an apple and rhubarb crumble with toasted coconut and a salted white chocolate cream. It was an ideal way to end what was a seriously tasty dinner. Rascal also offers matched drink options to go with the food, and I went with the beer and whisky option. This came with two beers and a serve of whisky, which was a great way to round out the meal. It really made the whole thing feel much more like an event, which is not something I’d felt for a while!

Overall I’m so glad I treated myself to this dinner from Rascal, and I’m keeping an eye on the weekly menu to order again in the future, that’s for sure. I highly recommend you give them a try if you’re after a delicious meal for a really reasonable price!
