My Plastic Free July This Year

Before Plastic Free July kicked off I shared my intended focus with you all so I thought it might be helpful to also share how my Plastic Free July actually went as well! I’d love to hear how you got on this year as well – we can all learn and grow together!

One of my Plastic Free July focuses was avoiding plastic for things like fruit and nuts, and that one was a roaring success. I got myself some new Seed and Sprout bags (the Farmers Market set) and they sure did come in handy.

I have been making overnight oats for breakfast and picked up new combos of dried fruits and nuts each week in my reusable bags from my local bulk food store. Which also meant I met another of my Plastic Free July aims – shopping locally!

I wasn’t completely successful at this, but I definitely spent more time shopping places other than the supermarket this month, and for me that’s a good start. Definitely something I will continue to focus on over the coming months as well.

I didn’t do a whole lot of shopping in general this month, but the online shopping I did also had some wins. I have been looking for online stores that deliver items with the least amount of packaging, and had some excellent wins on that front. It’s something I have always loved about shopping at Biome – everything arrives in a box they are reusing from a supplier and there is no additional packaging. My Seed and Sprout order came in a compostable bag, which maybe shouldn’t have been a surprise given what the company stands for, but it was still a win!

Maybe slightly more surprising is the fact I could order my Mecca delivery using a sustainable option which came with no plastic packaging and was fully recyclable. It’s always nice to see big companies making these kinds of changes, and I’m definitely more likely to keep shopping with them.

It wasn’t all wins though. I definitely ended up with some plastic food packaging on a couple of occasions, but much less than before my Plastic Free July started, and that’s really what it is all about. I’m also not going to stop the focus now that we are into August – it’s all part of a gradual change of habits for me! Overall, I’m calling it a Plastic Free July success!

That was my Plastic Free July, I’d love to hear about yours too!
