Port Douglas Eating: Hemingway’s Brewery

On my recent trip to Port Douglas we visited Hemingway’s Brewery again on a couple of occasions, so I thought I would share my thoughts with you all today. Finding tasty vegetarian food can be a little tricky at seaside locations, but Hemingway’s Brewery had enough options to keep me happy!

The Brewery is located at the marina, and has a nice relaxed vibe, despite being very popular and therefore crowded. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the view over the boats while the sun sets is hard to beat!

Unsurprisingly they have a great range of beers on tap, and do tasting paddles of their beers which is always a good way to try a few options. We settled on some favourites that we came back to a few times, and my mum was a big fan of the cider and ginger beers as well.

As for the food, I ended up trying a large proportion of the vegetarian options over our couple of visits! The Hummus with Grilled Flatbread ($12.30) was an excellent snack option. The flatbread was warm and fluffy, and the hummus was creamy and flavourful. The ratio between bread and dip was spot on as well – I hate when you end up with too much of one or the other!

The Field Mushroom Burger ($21.50) was another good option, served with taleggio cheese, red peppers, greens and a sherry dressing, with a side of fries. Whole mushroom burgers are never my favourite, but I did enjoy this one. The mushroom was juicy and tender, and the cheese and dressing added some good flavour. The bun was sturdy enough to hold everything together as well which I always appreciate!

The Cauliflower Sub ($18.20) with cauliflower fritters, green tahini, lettuce, sumac and onions was probably the highlight for me. We didn’t realise how large it was going to be, so my sister and I ordered a side of fries to share which we definitely didn’t need! This wasn’t the easiest thing to eat, but it sure was tasty. The fritters were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, with lots of flavour It was a simple dish, but a winning one at that.

The last dish I tried was the Mushroom Truffle pizza ($24.60) which came with field mushrooms, confit garlic, taleggio cheese, mozzarella, parsley and truffle oil. This was another delicious dish. The base was soft without being too thick, and there was a good balance of all the toppings. It was fairly rich, but it was balanced well with a beer or two!

Overall we enjoyed all our visits to Hemingway’s Brewery, which might explain why we went there three times in 12 days!
