Review: South of Johnston, Collingwood

It’s rather ridiculous how long it’s taken me to do a review of South of Johnston (or SoJo as it’s often known) given you can quite literally see it from my apartment, but here we are!

B and I first visited SoJo when it opened a few years back, and since moving into my place in January I’ve eaten there a couple more times with my folks, but on this visit with B I finally remembered to take my camera so I could actually review it!

We went around 1pm on a Sunday and had to wait about 20 minutes for a table, but luckily they have some comfy couches by a fireplace, so we made ourselves at home and perused the menu so we’d be ready to go when a table became available. It was too late in the day for me to have coffee so I went with a chai latte instead ($4.50), but B went with his standard order of English Breakfast Tea. The chai was decently sized and really nicely spiced, so I thoroughly enjoyed it.

B went with a breakfast option off the specials board – a combo of poached eggs with tomato, avocado, feta, pesto and spinach on sourdough ($18.90). The eggs were perfectly cooked, there was a good ratio of each of the ingredients and he was very happy with his order. A breakfast classic!

I decided to go with a lunch option and ordered the Tofu Salad ($16.90) which was soy and chilli tofu with soba noodles, tatsoi, bean shoots, cucumber, capsicum, sesame seeds, coriander, fried shallots and cashews. I was very excited when this arrived, and it tasted as good as it looked. Full of fresh flavours, a hint of chilli kick and a great mix of flavours, with plenty of tofu as well. The only thing that would have made this even better was if the tofu had been slightly crunchy instead of soft, as the addition of a crunch element would have made this perfect. It’s a pretty minor criticism though, as I really loved this salad and would very happily order it again!

We left feeling very satisfied with our meal and will no doubt be back again soon! It’s an excellent local cafe, now if only we could get a locals pass to skip the queues or something!

I had this yesterday when we went for a work lunch! It was yum, but so slippery and hard to pick up with a fork.

Ha! What are the chances! Mine wasn’t overly slippery, maybe you got extra dressing or something?!

Maybe. I did squeeze lime all over it! I feel like I needed chopsticks or something.

I like SoJo, I get my coffees there when I’m buying..so much better and more laid back than Proud Mary’s. They also supported us for StreetSmart so extra points.
