Spring Smoothies

Now that the weather has started warming up I’ve started having smoothies for breakfast again and I’ve been trying all kinds of flavour combinations. I thought I would share some of my new discoveries and favourite combos with you in case you were looking for some smoothie inspiration too!

I have been drinking almond milk as my milk of choice for a while now and it makes a great base for smoothies. I have recently discovered a brand (Almond Breeze) that makes unsweetened vanilla almond milk and it has quickly become my favourite for smoothies (and well, most things!) as it adds great flavour but doesn’t have any added sugar so it’s still a healthy choice. Love it.

My other new discovery is using avocado in my smoothies. I know for lots of people this isn’t earth shattering, but until very recently I wouldn’t go near avocado, so the fact I am now eating it regularly and even including it in my smoothies is pretty incredible! It makes smoothies extra creamy and delicious, and you can’t even taste the avocado but you get its good, healthy fats.

I always found the texture of avocado off putting, and this was compounded when I spent 2 months living with a French family in Bordeaux when I was 16 and I used to go to my host grandmas house for lunch every school day. She cooked us amazing three course lunches every day but entree was often just half an avocado served with balsamic vinegar. Because I didn’t want to be rude (and lets face it, when I first arrived I didn’t have enough French to be able to explain my dislike of avocado anyway!) I made myself eat it every time it was served, so then didn’t touch it for a verrry long time after I got back!

Anyway, on to the smoothies!

I didn’t intentionally match this smoothie with my nails, but that’s how it turned out! It’s made up of almond milk, frozen raspberries, frozen blueberries & spinach topped with more berries, chia seeds and caramel buckinis. Fresh and fruity!

This creamy smoothie is made from almond milk, two frozen bananas, raw cacao powder and half an avocado – it tastes like a choc-banana milkshake but is healthy and filling. Delicious!

This smoothie is refreshingly icy, and is great for rehydrating as it uses coconut water as the base. It’s a simple blend of the water with frozen mango and frozen strawberry, and it makes me excited for summer fruits!

I made this smoothie using spinach, frozen raspberries, frozen banana, half an avocado and almond milk and topped it with chia seeds and caramel buckinis. It was really creamy with a nice tang from the raspberries, although it was a slightly strange colour!

Last but not least is this yellow coloured goodness which is a mix of freshly squeezed orange juice with frozen mango and banana. Tangy, refreshing and full of Vitamin C, delicious!

Do you have a favourite smoothie combination you’d like to share? I’d love some more to try out!
