Sydney Exploring: Yullis Bar

For my sister’s birthday dinner we met up with two of her work friends and went to Yullis Bar on Crown Street in Surry Hills. Yullis is an all-vegetarian restaurant with an international menu that is designed to be shared, which is always okay with me as it means you get to try more of the food! The restaurant was packed so we sat upstairs in the bar area which still has access to the full menu, it just has stools and low tables. This wasn’t a problem for us though!

Our first dish was Steamed Leek & Ginger Dumplings ($12.50) which came with a plum sauce. These were really tasty – perfectly cooked with a nice and light filling which the sauce complemented really nicely.

Next up was a plate of Chilli Green Beans ($10.50) with a garlic & lime dressing. Having a side of greens was definitely a good idea, and these were nicely seasoned with a good kick of chilli (particularly if you got a lump of chilli on your bean!).

We then had our last few dishes arrive at once, starting with the Yulli’s Falafel Plate ($15.50) which are served on betel leaves with a tomato chutney and a ginger and pineapple salsa. These little parcels of goodness were gone in a flash as we piled them with salsa and chutney, wrapped them up and devoured them. Delicious!

This was followed by the Mixed Chip Plate ($13.50) which included battered sweet potato, taro, lotus root, beetroot and spanish onion. The platter was served with a range of sauces and some salt, which was probably not necessary as these were already not the healthiest thing we ordered! They were, however, very tasty and provided a nice element of crunch to the whole meal.

Our last dish was the Zucchini Fritters ($13.50) which were topped with a fetta and dill dressing. These also didn’t last very long – the fritters were well cooked and a nice dense package of grated zucchini with the slightly tangy dressing. I would have happily had more than one of these!

We left feeling more than adequately fed although not bursting at the seams (which is probably a good thing!) and although the dishes weren’t cheap we all really enjoyed the food and I would happily go back and sample more of the menu. There was a whole section of mains that we didn’t even look at!

Do you have a favourite all-vegetarian restaurant? Are you a fan of shared plates like I am?

Love Yulli’s food, athough it’s not vegetarian Bloodwood in Newtown has a similar shared plate style with a good selection of vegetarian options. I can never resist their polenta chips with gorgonzola sauce and their soccas are brilliant.

It was so delicious! And to think we only scratched the surface of the menu! Vegetarian restaurants simultaneously excite and frighten me with all the choice, I’m just not used to it!
