The Foodie Files: The Life of Clare

Welcome to the fourth instalment of the Foodie Files! Today I am chatting to the super lovely Clare from the Life of Clare about all things food! I’ve met Clare a few times now and she’s always wonderful to spend time with, and I love her philosophy towards food, so I’m sure you will too!

If you’re not already following her adventures then you’re in a for a treat. Clare shares her simple living life down on the coast of Victoria with her husband and super cute son with posts on food, gardening, and green living, all of which are most excellent reading. Now, over to our chat!

Do you have a philosophy towards food?

I’m super passionate about buying seasonal and local. We visit the local farmers market once a week, I’ve done quite a lot of research into where we buy our meat, we grow bits and pieces and I love to get to know local producers.

What’s your favourite food memory?

We try to have a fancy dinner out for our wedding anniversary each year. Visiting Brae (http://thelifeofclare.com.au/brae-restaurant/) was a wonderful dining experience.

Do you have a go-to food of choice?

I have different go-to’s for different situations. There’s the go-to dinner option, lasagne (http://thelifeofclare.com.au/the-best-lagasne-ever/), then there’s my Grandma’s Apple Slice (http://thelifeofclare.com.au/apple-slice/), my go to snack recipe and if I have to ‘take a plate’ I will always make this salad (http://thelifeofclare.com.au/coleslaw/)

What’s your favourite meal of the day?

Breakfast without any question. We had an early morning wedding and served brunch at the reception.

What’s the strangest food you’re ever eaten (and would you eat it again?!)

I once ate a red belly black snake. It was was slithering towards the house I was living in and there were five kids under five in the front yard. One of the dads went into protective mode and killed it. Not wanting it to go to waste we skinned it and cooked it up. It was like fishy chicken, very boney. I just ate a little but some of the others ate more and swear they had snake related dreams. I wouldn’t choose to eat it again.

If you were showing a visitor around town for a weekend where would be your must-eat destinations?

I’d start for breakfast at Elkhorn Roadhouse (http://elkhornroadhouse.com.au/), at this time of year we’d head into Barwon Heads to visit Natural Harry (http://www.instagram.com/natural_harry) for some delicious raw treats and a smoothie. We’d lash out for dinner and head over the Queenscliff to go to Vue Street Bar (http://www.vuegrand.com.au/dining/vue-street-bar/) for dinner to try their amazing selection of local beers and wine. And then after a slow morning grabbing coffee and breakfast at Cafe Indulge (http://www.cafeindulge.com.au/), we’d head over and lounge on the grass at Flying Brick Cider Co (http://www.flyingbrickciderco.com.au/), enjoy the sunny Sunday arvo.
