Homemade salt scrubs make the most perfect gift for friends, neighbours, teachers or pretty much anyone! Not only are they thoughtful, useful and smell delicious, but they are also quick, easy and cheap to whip up, which is definitely a plus at this time of year! My lemon rosemary salt scrub can be made using ingredients you most likely already have in your cupboard and garden, and can be mixed and in the jars within minutes, making it the perfect last minute gift!
So why lemon and rosemary? The lemon gives it a really lovely fresh scent, whilst also acting as a natural disinfectant, whilst the rosemary is seen as a natural invigorator, which we all need a little of at this time of year! The added bonus is lemon and rosemary both grow easily at home, so they are cheap, handy options on that front as well!
I use this mainly as a hand scrub, but every week or so I use it in the shower as well, just avoid your face as the salt is a bit too abrasive for the delicate skin on our faces. The addition of coconut oil means that your hands are getting moisturised as well as scrubbed, and anything that can perform two tasks is definitely a win in my books!
So, how do we make it?
Ingredients List
- 1 1/2 cups salt
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- Juice and zest of a lemon
- 3 sprigs rosemary
Steps
- Stir together salt and coconut oil (which should be in liquid form, melt if necessary)
- Add the lemon juice and zest and stir to combine
- Finely chop the rosemary and stir through
- Spoon into jars and you’re done!
You can really use any salt you have on hand – Epsom salts are great but rock or sea salts will work just as well. It’s definitely best to stir the oil through to coat the salt before adding the lemon as the other way around can cause the salt to start to break down pretty quickly, which isn’t quite what we’re after!
As this lemon rosemary salt scrub is free from any preservatives it’s best to use it within a few weeks, and you might need to give it a bit of a shake every now and again to ensure everything is still mixed together. If your house gets particularly warm, or you want to extend the life by a little bit then just pop it in the fridge!
So let’s get scrubbing!
