Pubs for Vegetarians: The Fox

As a vegetarian living in the inner suburbs of Melbourne it’s generally not too hard to find a good pub meal, so I thought I would start to share some of my favourite places to eat out for a casual, low-key, but still delicious meal – starting with the Fox Hotel!

The Fox Hotel is on Wellington Street in Collingwood and is a great little local pub with a cosy dining room as well as a roof deck which is especially great in summer. They have a big range of drinks, and their food menu is extensive – providing both your general pub fare as well as some more modern dishes. The vibe is laid back and it’s usually pretty busy – so much so it often pays to book a table on weekends!

On to the food! They have a separate vegetarian menu and also usually have at least one vegetarian special, so there’s never a shortage of choice. In fact, I usually end up feeling overwhelmed by all the options! Luckily B is generally happy to share his food with me as well, so we get to try twice as many dishes!

On our most recent visit we started off with the mushroom and tofu gyozas w dipping sauce ($12) which were delicious. The salad underneath was nice and fresh, and the dumplings were perfectly cooked. Excellent start!

We then shared the Teriyaki tofu w tempura veg, steamed rice, sesame, wasabi mayo & a ginger sauce ($19)

And the Pumpkin, goat’s cheese, coriander & black bean chilli served w corn chips, guacamole, sour cream & salad ($19).

Both mains were delicious! The tempura veggies were nicely battered and still really light, not at all stodgy, and the tofu was nice and firm on the outside but melty and smooth on the inside – perfect! The chilli was also really nice, the addition of pumpkin made for a mix of flavours I wouldn’t have thought of trying, but will definitely be experimenting with now! It had a bit of a kick to it, but not so spicy that you lose all sense of flavour, because where’s the fun in that!

The serving sizes are generous and you definitely get your moneys worth, although not so large that they aren’t able to be finished. We may have had to roll ourselves home afterwards however! We have eaten at the Fox a few times now and have never left disappointed (or hungry) so if you’re ever in this part of Melbourne I would highly recommend a visit!

Do you have a favourite pub for a meal? Anywhere you think I should check out their vegetarian fare?

We love The Fox! And we’re all over veg-friendly pubs in Melbourne. If you want mock-meat, then is unbeatable (while <a href="http://herestheveg.blogspot.com/2012/05/cornish-arms.html" title="The Cornish Arms" is a bit cheaper and still pretty reasonable). in Footscray is worth a look as well.

If you’re not too excited by veggie parmas, then you’ll still do well at , and .

There are heaps of others too – check out our tag for more.
