Today it’s stop two on our eating tour of Daylesford! After spending the morning getting massaged and pampered we were ready for a feed so headed to Breakfast & Beer for lunch in the sunshine. True to its name, this cafe is open for all day breakfast and lunch, with an impressive range of beers from local and small-scale breweries.
B started with his regular English Breakfast Tea ($4) (before joining me for a beer!) which came in a cute teapot with a serve of honey on the side which was a lovely touch.
I went with a beer suggested to me by the owner, an American Pale Ale ($9) from a brand new South Australian brewery called Smiling Samoyed. It was a great beer for the afternoon sunshine, refreshing with a little bit of bitterness and some lovely citrus flavours. It was easy to drink, that’s for sure!
For lunch B went with the Brioche roll ($8) with fried egg, rocket, carrot and chutney, to which the owner suggested adding a corn fritter to bulk it up to a more substantial lunch (add $3). This was a great lunch option, the egg was perfectly cooked, the yolk oozing out just as it should. Adding the fritter was the perfect move, it made it a much more filling dish and was the perfect flavour balance. B did end up stealing some beetroot and goats curd from my plate to add to the combination which was a genius move, adding a bit of sweetness to the otherwise very savoury bun. He was a very happy fellow!
I ordered the Organic Potato Hash ($15) which came with avocado and the aforementioned beetroot relish and goats curd, and I also added a poached egg to the mix. The potato hash wasn’t what I expected, but it was certainly delicious! The combination of flavours and textures worked really well, with the potato hash providing a little bit of crunch to the plate of otherwise very soft ingredients. The egg was poached perfectly and I was very glad I added it to the plate, and I really loved getting a little bit of each element on my fork for every bite. It was an excellent lunch!
Overall we had a really delicious meal and I’m glad we went with the Breakfast & Beer option as both the food and drink was spot on. The staff were fantastic as well, and I would definitely eat there again if we find ourselves in Daylesford again sometime soon.
