As I mentioned at the end of my post on compost options for apartment dwellers, I decided to go with a Bokashi Bucket to deal with any food waste in my little apartment. Well, I’m happy to say it arrived on the weekend so I thought I’d share how it works in some more detail now that I have one in my hot little hands!
My bokashi arrived with a separate bin for food scraps which I will store in the kitchen and use while I’m cooking, before I transfer the scraps into the bucket. It also came with a cup for draining out the liquid, a masher for squishing down the food scraps (not to be mixed up with the potato masher in my kitchen!) and a 1kg bag of the bokashi grains.
I fitted the tap into the front, bottom part of the bucket to drain off the liquid and then added the draining tray which sits towards the bottom of the bucket and allows the liquid to drain through as the food scraps break down.
You then sprinkle a layer of the grain on top of this tray, followed by your food scraps, which you give a good mash to try and remove as much excess air as possible.
It’s then just a matter of popping the lid back on nice and tight and leaving it to work its magic until you next need to add some food scraps. Easy-peasy. Well, I hope so at least! I will keep track of how I’m travelling with it and let you all know! I’m keeping mine in the back, shady part of my balcony for now, but once I rearrange some things it will move into my laundry, so I’m very much hoping the claim that it doesn’t smell is true!
